Impression of study life in Johns Hopkins University
After four months’ study in theUnited States, my excitement and anxiety of newcomer have faded away, I also have been accustomed to being a visiting scholar. However, every day when I am wandering around the Medical Campus of Johns Hopkins University, watching the young or old faces of scholars, all kinds of advertising posted on the school’s bulletin board for the research volunteer recruitment, listening to the students’ debate on the lawn, I am still impressed by the fully open and free academic atmosphere here. The Johns Hopkins University was founded in 1876, located in Baltimore, Maryland. It is one of the world's best private universities, especially in medicine, public health, biological science field. In the past 20 years, every 3-5 years there was a school alumni or faculty won the Nobel prize in medicine or physiology. Outstanding achievements make the university famous throughout the world. John Hopkins hospital is ranked first in theUnited Stateswith its unshakable advantage for 20 consecutive years. The Bloomberg School of public health, where I work in, was funded by the Rockefeller foundation in 1916, had been established for 100 years. As the first independent, degree-granting institution for research and training in public health, and the largest public health training facility in theUnited States, the Bloomberg School is ranked first in public health in the United States and has held that ranking since 1994. I currently work in Professor Ying Zhang's laboratory in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology Department, major in antimicrobial screening and validation research on Nontuberculous Mycobacterium. Through four months of hard work, including retrieving lots of literatures, attending the postgraduate course of microbiology, practicing constantly, I have grown up from a layman of the microbiology experiment to a skilled researcher. I also can report experimental plans and progress with fluent English now. This precious learning experience, explore my mind of scientific research, help me to find a new research direction for further study. With Professor Zhang’s instruction, I also have learned a more rigorous and pragmatic research attitude.
